Frequently Asked Questions
Can we hire you to do 1:1 tutoring for my child?
Dr. Hong does not even have time to do 1:1 tutoring for his own kids. His time is better spent helping a group of kids rather than just one or two.
How to have you tutor my child?
If your child makes one of the programs Dr. Hong is affiliated with, such as Team Charlotte, Team USA for IMC, and MIT PRIMES, he will be able to coach, tutor, or mentor your child in a team or group setting. Dr. Hong donates his time and money to these programs, so that they are affordable to everyone in need. Please keep in mind that these programs are highly selective, so your child has to work really hard to earn a roster spot.
My child is not yet at the level to participate in these selective programs, what shall we do?
Dr. Hong would highly recommend that you help your child form a study group with several other kids of similar level. Your child will learn from the peers and enjoy the organic growth.
Could you recommend any companies that offer training courses for competition math?
Dr. Hong has seen so many unfortunate kids who were mistakenly pushed by their parents into competition trainings. Those parents wasted their children's time and opportunities to excel in some other areas. Without knowing your child, Dr. Hong cannot make any recommendations about training courses. Nevertheless, Dr. Hong recommends Khan Academy to all students who are learning K-12 math.
Could you provide a recommendation letter to endorse my application to selective programs and elite colleges?
Dr. Hong does not provide reference letters to random kids. If you have had significant hours of interactions with Dr. Hong over the past one to two years, you can send an email to Dr. Hong with detailed background information about yourself and the program or college you are applying to. Dr. Hong usually spends a good amount of time crafting a reference letter, so please give him at least two weeks of lead time.
