Summary
500 students from 29 countries participated in the International Mathematics Competition 2025. Two UNC Charlotte Professors Dr. Tao Hong and Dr. Harold Reiter led Team USA to eight gold medals, five silver medals, and two bronze medals.
The competition was hosted by Vietnam from August 14th to 19th, 2025, open to students from upper primary level (Key-Stage II, 6th grade and under) to lower secondary level (Key-Stage III, 9th grade and under). Team USA was made of 16 students coming from North Carolina (3), Washington (2), Alaska (1), British Columbia (1), California (2), Illinois (2), Indiana (1), Massachusetts (1), Maryland (1), Tennesee (1), and Texas (1). Four of them participated in Key-Stage II, while the other twelve in Key-Stage III.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, this is the first time that USA participates in person at the International Mathematics Competition. Individually, several USA students ranked at top 10 of their divisions. Among 266 contestants in Key-Stage III, Isaac Chan-Osborn is one of the only two perfect scores tied at 1st place, followed by Leo Hong tied at 3rd place; Jason Lee tied at 7th place. Among 234 contestants in Key-Stage II, Steve Cui and Andrew Mao tied at 5th place.
Based upon the scores on AMC10/12, AIME, and the students' performance on MathCounts Nationals, 16 students were invited to the team training camp at Charlotte from July 6th to 10th, 2025. The camp included 4 research seminars, 3 student-led presentations (MOPpers lecture series), 6 practice sessions, and 1 field trip. Telra Institute provided the venue free of charge. The cost of the camp was covered through a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
